This is NOT a Drill! Crazy Taxi is Back!

Few gaming announcements have generated as much nostalgia-fueled excitement recently as the return of Crazy Taxi. After years of rumors, teasers, and speculation, Sega has finally pulled back the curtain on Crazy Taxi: World Tour, marking the return of one of the most beloved arcade franchises of all time.

For many players, this is more than just another sequel. It is the return of a gaming icon.

Why Crazy Taxi Still Matters

Originally released in arcades in 1999 before becoming a Dreamcast classic, Crazy Taxi built its reputation on pure arcade fun. Players raced through crowded city streets, picked up passengers, and earned increasingly ridiculous fares by driving as recklessly as possible.

It was easy to learn, difficult to master, and packed with personality. That combination helped make it one of Sega’s most memorable franchises and one of the defining games of the Dreamcast era.

What We Know About World Tour

Based on the reveal, Crazy Taxi: World Tour is aiming to modernize the formula while preserving the chaotic energy that made the original so popular. The game is scheduled for release in 2027 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.

The new title appears to feature:

  • Multiple global locations
  • Expanded exploration
  • Story driven content
  • Classic arcade-style taxi gameplay
  • New large-scale environments to drive through

Sega has described the game as a major revival of the franchise rather than a simple remake.

Why The Hype Is So Strong

Part of the excitement comes from timing.

Over the last decade, many players have felt that the industry has moved away from the kind of fast-paced arcade experiences that once dominated gaming.

Crazy Taxi represents a return to a style of game that prioritizes fun, speed, and personality over endless progression systems. There is also the fact that Sega has been actively reviving several of its classic franchises, including Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, and Shinobi. For longtime Sega fans, Crazy Taxi feels like one of the crown jewels of that effort.

The One GLARING Issue…

While the reveal has been largely positive, there has been some discussion surrounding Sega’s confirmation that generative AI tools were used during parts of development.

Sega has stated that the technology was used only as a support tool and that artists still created the final assets.  Even with that controversy, the overall reaction has remained overwhelmingly focused on one thing: Crazy Taxi is back!

Final Thoughts

For years, fans wondered if Sega would ever bring Crazy Taxi back in a meaningful way. Now that answer appears to be yes.

Crazy Taxi: World Tour looks poised to deliver the same over-the-top energy, frantic driving, and arcade spirit that made the original such a classic, while introducing the franchise to a new generation of players.

There is still plenty left to learn before its 2027 release, but one thing is already clear: few revivals have generated this much excitement this quickly.
